In a modern terms, the Roman autocrat Augustus, was a nationalist. He did not want to see the Roman nation ruined by moral degeneracy, immigration or depleted from childlessness. He said that where no families thrive and children don't inherit, the land falls to foreigners. The early Roman culture was conservative. Augustus' sincere compliment to fathers among the Roman knights, was recorded by historian Cassius Dio, in "Roman History", Book LVI: "Though you are few in number compared to the vast crowd that inhabits this city, and far less numerous than those who are unwilling to perform any of their duties, I praise you even more for this reason and am truly grateful to you for being obedient and helping to replenish the homeland. For it is through lives like yours that future Romans will become a great multitude. We started as just a handful, but when we turned to marriage and had children, we surpassed all others not only in the strength of our citizens but also in our population size. Keeping this in mind, we must embrace our human nature with a continuous succession of generations, like torchbearers in a race, so that through one another we may achieve a form of immortality in the part of our nature that falls short of divine happiness. It was for this reason that the first and greatest god, who created us, divided humanity into two halves, making one half male and the other half female, and instilled in them love and a drive for mutual connection, making their unions fruitful so that the children born could, in a way, make even mortality eternal. Indeed, even among the gods, some are considered male and others female, and the tradition holds that some have given birth to others while being born themselves. So even among those beings who do not need such arrangements, marriage and having children are seen as noble pursuits. You have done well, therefore, to imitate the gods and to follow the example of your fathers, so that, just as they brought you into the world, you too may bring others into being; that, just as you honor them and call them ancestors, others may regard you in the same way; that the good deeds they accomplished and passed down to you may also be shared with others; and that the possessions they acquired and left to you may also be passed on to your own children. Is there anything better than a wife who is faithful, dedicated to the home, a good caretaker, who brings you joy in health, cares for you in sickness, shares your successes, and comforts you in misfortune? Isn’t it a delight to recognize a child who shows the traits of both parents, to nurture and educate them, seeing in their growth a reflection of yourself? Isn’t it a blessing, when leaving this life, to leave behind a successor and heir to your blood and legacy, one who is your own, so that while your own life fades, you continue to live on in your child? This way, you won't fall into the hands of foreigners, as if by war, nor perish completely, as in a plague. These are the personal benefits that come from marrying and having children; but for the State, for which we should do many things that may not always be pleasant, it is excellent and necessary for cities and people to exist. If you are to govern others and have the world obey you, we need a multitude of people to cultivate the land in times of peace, to travel, engage in trades, and, in times of war, to protect what we already have with even greater commitment because of family bonds and to replace those who fall. Therefore, men—you alone may rightly be called men—and fathers, you are as deserving of this title as I am. I admire and commend you for this; I not only offer the prizes I have already given but will also honor you further with additional accolades and positions, so you can benefit greatly and pass these benefits on to your children. Now, I will turn to the other group, whose actions cannot compare to yours, and whose rewards will therefore be quite different. You will see not only from my words but even more from my actions how much you excel them."
