👩‍💻 Becoming an AI Artist with Midjourney Artist Cantrell Betancourt became interested in Midjourney due to the boom of generated content on Instagram. She studied prompt composition techniques and now creates genuine works of art using AI. It inspired the launch of the book "Dreaming In Digital" — not so much a manual for Midjourney, but a true album by an artist who has created hundreds of paintings using generative AI. Who is Cantrell Betancourt? Betancourt is a graduate of New York University with a Master of Science in digital imaging and design. She has worked at Cosmopolitan and The Knot Magazine and is an author and developer of Web3 video games. She creates digital content using Autodesk Maya, Unreal Engine, Adobe Suite, and Blender. What Does "Dreaming In Digital" Include? ➡️ Over 100 prompts adapted for the fashion and beauty industry ➡️ Educational booklets for practical learning: expert tips and tools for applied tasks Betancourt on AI in Visual Arts: 🎨 AI-based tools will make creativity accessible to people with disabilities, enabling them to produce art by entering text prompts. Such artists can work with Midjourney in any way, whether typing, speech, or Braille. 🧑‍🎨 Generative AI is a playing field for everyone so that average Jane can compete with large companies. Not Everyone Favors Generated Art Meanwhile, the social network Cara is gaining popularity in the App Store, where digital artists publish their art created without AI involvement. The platform emerged as an alternative to Instagram. Meta planned to use all content for training its AI, which representatives of the creative industry opposed. Cara has a web version and a mobile app. The social network resembles a combination of Instagram and X, specifically designed for artists. 😷 AI Will "Hear" Tuberculosis According to the WHO, around 4,500 people die of tuberculosis worldwide daily, and another 30,000 fall ill with it. Although the disease is treatable, millions of people — especially in developing countries — remain unaware of their diagnosis.  A new AI tool from Google will help identify tuberculosis and other respiratory diseases in people who don't have convenient access to medical services. 🔈 HeAR (Health Acoustic Representations) model relies on bioacoustics. The Google Research team trained it on over 300 million audio recordings, including 100 million cough sounds. The tool is easily downloadable to a smartphone. It uses cough recordings to immediately identify early signs of TB and instruct on what to do next.
Every missed case of tuberculosis is a tragedy; every late diagnosis is a heartbreak. Acoustic biomarkers offer the potential to rewrite this narrative. Sujay Kakarmath, Google Research, HeAR developer.
👩‍⚕️ In India, several hospitals are already using AI tools for the primary diagnosis of lung diseases. For example, a respiratory healthcare startup and Google collaborator, Salcit Technologies, has launched a mobile app called Swaasa. It helps doctors make primary TB diagnoses remotely. All a patient needs to do is upload a 10-second recording of his cough to the app. The service makes the right call in 94% of cases. How it's helpful ➡️ Bioacoustic tests are much cheaper than traditional diagnostic methods like blood tests or spirometry. Yet they are almost as accurate and fast. ➡️ AI lung health screening is a way to help people living in remote or poor regions where good hospitals are inaccessible. ➡️ AI bioacoustic techniques can help identify other problems, such as assessing babies' health by the sound of their crying. ➕ The HeAR API model is in the public domain for medical startups and developers. 🌍 AI Has Learned to Create Open-World Games The Chinese holding Tencent has introduced GameGen-O, a revolutionary AI model for creating open-world video games where characters can freely move through the game space without strict scripts. It is the first step towards generating games like Tomb Raider or Red Dead Redemption. 🤪 How the Model Works GameGen-O uses a dataset compiled from over 150 games, including more than 4,000 hours of video content. A unique system meticulously processes this extensive dataset, sorting and adding annotations to specific scenes. ⁉️ How GameGen-O Was Trained GameGen-O goes through two training stages. First, the model generates game content based on text descriptions. Then, it undergoes fine-tuning using the InstructNet network. At this stage, the model learns to create game scenes and respond to interactive user commands. It generates subsequent video frames responding to instructions like "the character should go right." 💫 CanYou Create a Compete Game? Although GameGen-O currently only creates short video clips rather than full-fledged games, developers can already use the model to prototype and test game elements rapidly. 👀 Check out a video review of GameGen-O here. 🥵 AI Helps Cities Cope with Heat Waves Over half a million people die yearly from extreme heat worldwide, and the summer of 2024 became the warmest on record. People living in big cities, where the so-called urban heat islands form, suffer the most. These zones tend to heat more than others and then release additional heat, causing temperatures to rise even further. Google Research Labs has introduced a set of AI tools to help cities address extremely high temperatures and better protect residents from heat waves. ⚛️ Heat Resilience The model can identify the neighborhoods most vulnerable to extreme temperatures by analyzing the cities' satellite and aerial imagery and other data, such as average summer temperatures in the area and the local communities' standard of living. The service is currently piloted in 14 U.S. cities. 🌴 Tree Canopy This tool identifies areas lacking vegetation and provides early alerts about heat islands. Tree Canopy is used in 2,000 cities worldwide. 🏠 Сool Roofs The AI learns the terrain and identifies areas where "cool roofs" are most needed. Such roofs better reflect sunlight, preventing buildings from heating up too much. The service also helps reduce energy consumption during heat waves by 27%. Cool Roofs is preparing to launch in 11 cities, including New York, Nashville, and Melbourne. 👍 Why it's helpful The algorithms can detect the most heat-prone areas and calculate the change in average surface temperatures after cooling interventions. Such data will help urban planners design city spaces with climate change in mind. More on the topic: AI Now Forecasts Floods How AI is Helping to Put Out Fires #news @hiaimediaen

🚸 Robotaxi to School Waymo, a subsidiary of Alphabet, is rolling out a new service called "Waymo Teen" that will allow teens to use its robotaxis. Parents can track every ride in real time. 💡 Where the Idea Comes From Some parents in San Francisco are already discreetly hailing Waymo taxis for their kids, despite current rules requiring riders over 18 to hop in one of its robotaxis alone. These parents often circumvent the restrictions due to safety concerns with public transit and distrust of traditional taxi drivers. "Waymo Teen" aims to legitimize this underground trend. This move aligns with a similar initiative from Uber. The "Uber for Teens" service allows passengers aged 13-17 to order rides and food under parental supervision. 💵 "Waymo Teen's" subscription will range from $150 to $250 per monthly 16 rides. Waymo's driverless taxi service currently operates in cities like Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Austin. Which do you think is safer for a child? ❤️ — A traditional taxi with a driver 😎 — I'm all for a robotaxi Source More on the topic: 🚕 Waymo: The Future of Self-Driving Taxis
