Dans l'East End de Londres, des "knockers-uppers" étaient engagés pour réveiller les gros dormeurs afin qu'ils ne manquent pas leur travail. Les maisons des ouvriers étaient dotées de panneaux d'ardoise fixés aux murs extérieurs, sur lesquels ils inscrivaient à la craie les détails de leur quart de travail, afin que les "knocker-uppers" puissent les réveiller au bon moment. Mary Smith, une knocker-upper renommée, utilisait une approche peu conventionnelle, tirant des pois secs à travers un tuyau pour réveiller ses clients, au lieu d'utiliser une perche traditionnelle. Elle demandait six pence par semaine pour son service. Alors que certains de ses homologues se contentaient de frapper à la porte ou à la fenêtre, la technique des pois secs de Mary permettait de réveiller ses clients sans déranger leurs voisins, ce qui a fait d'elle une figure appréciée de la communauté de l'East End dans les années 1920. Un livre pour enfants porte même son nom, attestant de sa popularité, dépassant celle de son plus proche concurrent, un cogneur situé à trois miles de là, qui tapait sur les fenêtres à l'aide d'une canne à pêche.
