https://beacons.ai/davidbondOne of the most frustrating things about staying in touch with certain people, especially those from the U.S., is their obsession with using SMS. It’s honestly so irritating that people still want to text back and forth using such an outdated, old-school method. We’ve got Telegram, WhatsApp, Signal, Facebook Messenger—there are so many advanced communication tools that let you send pictures, videos, or voice notes. Why are so many Americans still using the most basic, outdated tech for communication? It's just lazy, dumb, and cringe-worthy.
One of the funny contradictions in the Philippines is how people are very sensitive about being loud and rude. For example, instead of using their fingers to point, they use their lips. They also do something called "kiss calling." If they're in a public space, they think it's rude to be loud or attract too much attention with aggressive gestures or by raising their voice. So, instead of saying, "Hey, man" or "Hey, you," they'll make little kiss sounds, like they're kissing the air. It's really interesting.
Also, when a Filipino knocks on your door, they do it super lightly—like a 5-year-old girl trying not to wake you up. They're absolutely petrified of being loud in certain ways. But at the same time, they'll blast music at 4 in the morning or have karaoke in their yard with the biggest speakers they can find and crank up the volume to max. They’ll play TikTok videos on their phones at full volume in a quiet airport.
It's just hilarious—the disconnect between being loud, which is seen as rude in some situations, and doing things that are extremely loud and annoying, which somehow aren’t considered rude. It's just an observation I made, and I think it's really funny.
