Cargo bike maker Europe Cycle Company has been ordered to halt sales of all its Vogue brand bikes and recall two types because of “serious safety concerns”, consumer safety organisation NVWA has confirmed. The two models, Troy and Journey, were found to have faulty frames and saddle pins, similar to the Babboe cargo bikes which were banned earlier this year. The NVWA received some 30 reports of breaking frames and saddle pins from consumers, dealers and retailers. Complaints directly to...
Opposition MPs have reacted in disbelief to the official documents about the government’s plans to declare an “asylum crisis” in which most of the text has been redacted out. “You can’t take this seriously,” said GroenLinks-PvdA leader Frans Timmermans as he leafed through the papers during the second day of the budget debate on Wednesday afternoon. “They’re all blacked out.” Mooi voorbeeld van oude, kleine politiek. #algemenebeschouwingen #APB2024 pic.twitter.com/ILfXXmnO5q — Volt Nederland (@VoltNederland) September 19, 2024 At least 20 of...
The Dutch financial markets regulator AFM has fined two men for promoting an illegal asset manager over a period of several years, netting themselves a payment of 10% of every invested amount. One man, Mories van de Venne, promoted the unlicenced company Grinta Invest via trade names Venno Trading, Venno Art and e-Forex, promising investors a return of 4% a month. He was fined €544,000, said to be roughly equivalent to his earnings. A second man, Koen Nieuwenhuijs, was fined...
Prime minister Dick Schoof has pledged to send documents that back up the cabinet’s claim the Netherlands is facing an “asylum crisis” to parliament later on Thursday, as the bad-tempered debate on the right-wing government’s 2025 budget continued. Schoof was heard muttering under his breath when pressed by opposition MPs for the documents on Thursday morning, on the second day of debate. Asylum also dominated discussions on Wednesday. The government hopes that by declaring a crisis it can bypass parliament...
Learning Dutch is about more than just learning words. It’s about the mysterious jargon which seeps into everyday conversation. So for our next inburgering lesson, it is time to take on this under-estimated aspect of the Dutch language Lesson 52: acronyms The Dutch love chopping everything down into a series of initials, and you will need to know lots in order make sense of what is going on around you. Here are some of our favourites. ATV stands for arbeidstijdverkorting and literally...
One of the parachutists taking part in a commemorative re-enactment of Operation Market Garden in Gelderland on Wednesday was injured when he landed in a tree. It is 80 years ago this year that American parachutists landed in the fields between Overasselt and Nederasselt as part of the Allied attempt to free the Netherlands in 1944. Some 25 parachutists jumped from a plane in the late afternoon, the second of two scheduled jumps but six people ended up in trees...
Four radical “sovereign citizens” have appeared in court in Rotterdam, charged with terrorism offences and two other men have been accused of supplying them with weapons. The four, said to be members of a group called Common Law Nederland Earth, aimed to replace the government and democratic institutions and believe that using deadly violence is legitimate, the public prosecution department said at the procedural hearing. The four had a plan for a “violent confrontation” with local officials in Deventer and...
