Examiner comment: This essay demonstrates a clear and well-structured response to the task, with a thorough exploration of the issue at hand. The candidate effectively addresses both sides of the argument, presenting a strong case for equal legal enforcement while also highlighting the risks associated with treating young offenders the same as adults. Despite the absence of specific examples in Body 1, the depth of analysis and logical progression of ideas compensate for this, ensuring that the essay remains fully relevant to the question. The use of sophisticated vocabulary and precise grammatical structures further strengthens the argument, with minimal errors that do not detract from the overall clarity of the response. The conclusion is well-rounded, reiterating the need for a balanced approach without overextending the argument. Overall Band Score: 9.0 Task Response: 9.0 Coherence and Cohesion: 9.0 Lexical Resource: 9.0 Grammatical Range and Accuracy: 9.0 This essay meets all the criteria for a high band score, demonstrating a strong command of language, clarity in argumentation, and excellent organization throughout.

A proposal suggests that young people should be punished as adults. While this idea has legal merit, I argue that treating them the same as adults could potentially make them more dangerous to society. On the one hand, the law should not be biased; it should not consider personal circumstances such as age, race, and ethnicity. It should instead enforce the same standards for all members of society to uphold the core principles of justice and objectivity within the legal system. By doing so, police officers and judicial representatives ensure that no perpetrator poses a direct threat to the welfare and well-being of the community, while clearly demonstrating to citizens the consequences of breaking the law. Therefore, young law-breakers should also be legally charged and taken to court for the crimes they have committed. These legal grounds notwithstanding, young people should not be thrust into the harsh world of adult prisons. If given a prison sentence—the default punishment in many countries—young individuals are likely to be exposed to a world completely alien to them. They are susceptible to the influence of more dangerous and hardened criminals, potentially learning new ways of misbehaving and law-breaking from their ill-fated peers. These factors combined can ignite antisocial and deviant behavior and, worst of all, lead to criminal relapse among young individuals. For this reason, it is essential that governments establish less invasive but equally accountable punishments for young criminals, such as community service, thus preventing exposure to the harsh criminal environment while simultaneously benefiting society. To conclude, crime, like any other human-related issue, is multifaceted and complex, with potential for both manipulation and defiance. Therefore, before resorting to extreme sentences, especially for young offenders, specialists along with the jury should be more flexible and understanding, ensuring that offenders face the consequences of their actions. However, these penalties should not push them further towards a life of crime.
