Glossitis
Definition:
is an inflammation of the tongue either it’s inflammatory in origin of particularly inflamed.
Causes of glossitis:
1- Common causes
• Anaemia
• Vitamin B group deficiencies (especially B12)
• Erythema migrans
• Candidosis
•median rhomboid glossitis
• Lichen planus
2- Rare causes
• Bacterial infection
• Scarlet fever
• Kawasaki disease
• Glucagon secreting pancreatic tumours
• Syphilitic glossitis of tertiary syphilis
Clinical features:
1- Erythematous changes
2- pain
3- burning sensation
4- tongue atrophy in specific disease
Treatment:
Depends on type of cause.

Fissured tongue
Definition:
Is a term described multiple small furrows or grooves on the dorsal surface of tongue.
Clinic Features:
⁃ Single or multiple grooves
⁃ shallow or deep groove/s
⁃ Usually the fissure at the middle of tongue is prominent
⁃ most fissures are found on the middle one-third of the tongue.
⁃ Occurs in about 5% of people especially male.
⁃ White coating from food intake
⁃ Harmless with no symptoms.
Causes:
⁃ the general cause of fissure tongue is unknown . It is a normal variation condition.
⁃ Sometimes this condition occurs with a Geographic tongue combination.
Treatment:
No treatment is necessary except to encourage good oral hygiene including brushing the top surface of the tongue to remove any food debris from the fissure.
