Series: Food in Thought (FiT) (1) Aloof & Ma’lūf: It is an interesting twist between the English word aloof (distant and not friendly) and the Arabic word أَلوف from أُلفه which means; friendly, warm and kind. While sounding the same, the two words stand at the opposite ends of the spectrum of human and social relationships; one being distant and the other close. A believer should not be aloof but ألوف مَألوف. And the worst ones are those who are لا يألف ولا يُؤلَف does not love others and is harsh that others don’t love them. In this age though, إيلاف which another derivative of the root أَلِفَ and means familiarity can be quite problematic. As they say, familiarity breeds contempt. When people have easy access and too much familiarity, this can cause damage to one’s life, health and relationships. Think about situations in your life where too much إيلاف has caused disruption to your life and the very purpose of ألفه that you wanted from the relationship. I suggest that people have to strike a balance between being alūf ألوف and becoming aloof such that أُلفه warmth and love are maintained, and respect is restored and limits are observed. They say, الألفه لا ترفع الكُلفة familiarity and love shouldn’t lift courtesy and decorum. It does lift burdens but not adab. This can be when you know when to show what and how to be both aloof and alūf at the same time. The Prophet ﷺ used to mix with people and be cautious; always put hope in people’s hearts.

A snippet from the beginning of chapter 6 from the faqir’s takhmīs of the Burdah

Another snippet from the faqir’s takhmis of the Burdah: Alas! For a life squandered in every way In gathering wealth and days blows away And old age visiting, I have not prepared for his stay Were I to know that I would pay him due right I would have hid his secret with dye {rough translation}
