Scholz approves budget cuts for families with children in favor of defense spending German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and the Cabinet on Wednesday approved a lower draft 2024 budget that would cut benefits for families with children because of rising defense spending. The government's plan calls for spending of €445.7 billion – down 6.4% from the €476.3 billion expected to be spent this year. Overall, the budget cuts would affect all areas except defense. Defense spending is set to rise by €1.7 billion to some €51.8 billion. Furthermore, under the 2024 budget, families with two or more children would only be eligible for benefits if they have an income of less than €300,000 a year, which is €150,000 lower than the previous threshold. Scholz attributed the budget cuts in social spending to the need to fight the coronavirus and mitigate the effects of Ukraine's crisis.
