September, the ninth and sacred month was once called Hāliġmōnaþ or Hāliȝmōnaþ in OE – the Holy Month. Bede described the month as saying ‘Halegh-monath is a month of sacredness’. The OE poem Menologium seu Calendarium Poeticum described the month as a ‘holy month, because our ancestors, when they were heathen, sacrificed to their idols in that month’. The next full moon will be 3.34am on the 18th September (so the night of the 17th). This will be a blot or holy-moon, also called a harvest or wood-moon.

One of my friends saw a cat running around. He picked up a stone and threw it at the cat. One of the SS men saw him; in three steps he was next to my friend. He grabbed him by the scruff of his neck and gave him a good box on his ears, saying 'don't be cruel to animals!' Anecdote about the SS, by witness Wolfgang Held from 1933.

Karl Friedrich May (1842–1912) was a beloved German writer best known for his adventure novels set in the American Old West. His love and admiration for the American Indian, whom he had never met, fueled his imagination and earned him legions of fans. The German people had a deeply romanticized view of the American Plains Indians. They loved the perceived rebelliousness of the American Indian and admired their free spirit. Karl May called the American Indian 'Winnetou, der Edelmensch' (the noble human). The German's didn't despise people whom the Ango-saxons referred to as 'primitive'. Instead they found a sort of kinship and shared ideals. A back-to-nature longing which was predominant in the German spirit added to this. Adolf Hitler commented on the fact that May had never visited America or met any Native Americans, suggesting that this made May all the greater of a story teller, showcasing the power of his imagination. Below: 1938 Karl May poster from National Socialist Germany.

As early as 1927 a National Socialist representative to the Reichstag called for actions against cruelty to animals and kosher butchering. During the first few months as chancellor Adolf Hitler had the Reichstag enact laws for the protection of animals. A law imposing a total ban on animal experiments was enacted on August 16, 1933, by Hermann Göring as the prime minister of Prussia. He declared an end to the 'unbearable torture and suffering in animal experiments' and said that those who 'still think they can continue to treat animals as inanimate property' will be sent to prison. But Göring wasn't done yet. Göring went on to ban commercial animal trapping, and imposed severe restrictions on hunting. The Reich Hunting Law was enacted which regulated how many animals could be killed per year, and to establish proper 'hunting seasons'. Above: Animals saluting Göring - The poster declares 'Heil Göring' and 'Vivisection forbidden'.
