𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗣𝗘𝗢𝗣𝗟𝗘 𝗨𝗡𝗜𝗧𝗘𝗗-Toronto will feature Ricker Choi's arrangement of Ukrainian patriotic song 𝐎𝐡, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐝 𝐕𝐢𝐛𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐮𝐦 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐨𝐰 (Ой у лузі червона калина). The red viburnum (kalyna in Ukrainian) is a national symbol of Ukraine. Due to the song's association with the Ukrainian people's aspiration for independence, it was banned during the period in which Ukraine was a Soviet Republic (1919-1991). Nevertheless, Ukrainians sang it with defiance, as anyone caught singing it was jailed, beaten, and even exiled. 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗣𝗘𝗢𝗣𝗟𝗘 𝗨𝗡𝗜𝗧𝗘𝗗-Toronto is greatly honored to have Ukrainian pianist Oksana Hahn performing with us. Oksana Hahn was born in Kyiv, Ukraine to a family of choral conductor. She attended two Ukraine’s premier Schools of Music for Gifted Youth and studied with renowned teachers. Prior to arriving Canada in 1990, she had performed as a soloist and accompanist across Europe, became Laureat of All Ukraine Piano Competition in 1989. In Canada she has nurtured her students, many of whom have earned recognition at regional, provincial, and national levels. Antonina Ermolenko (https://www.antoninaermolenko.com/), Ukrainian-Canadian dramatic soprano, is fast gaining international acclaim for her “diva’s vocal technique and dramatic flair” (Promin). Antonina’s musical approach hearkens back to the Golden Age of opera, while infusing her own unique, character-driven approach to the art form. Her wide range of repertoire includes Bellini’s Norma, Puccini’s Tosca, Verdi’s Aida and Lady Macbeth, and Wagner’s Sieglinde. She has performed around the world, in venues such as the Glenn Gould Studio, Teatro Goldoni, and Ekhof Theater Gotha. She has worked with companies such as Opéra de Québec, Die Schönen Musiktheater Freiburg, Opera Classica Europa, and Ottawa’s New Opera Lyra.
