When I was a kid, coming home from the sea shore at night, we on occasion saw the moon just as it started to rise above the horizon.
You don't really see it in the city, because the sightline is so crowded with buildings and trees, but in the steppe and along the sea, the moon is golden and huge as it hangs low in the sky.
It's also darker than it usually is on full moon nights, when it's not fully risen yet. So you're just standing in pitch black looking at this golden coin-cheese wheel-honey jar thing, and you can't really see it moving up, because of how slow it is, but you can feel it. Hella weird.
I guess that's my closest "uncanny moon experience".

adhd thought of the night goes to the uncanny moon
humans, and at least some animals, have evolved instinctive reactions to some things, the type that activates all your bones in attack mode
you can read studies on the uncanny valley effect, where "that thing looks almost human but it is not fully human", and it unsettles the fuck out of basically anyone who isnt an evolutionary anomaly and/or has brain damage
you can listen to testimonies, of ppl who look at solar eclipses and tell you how wrong it feels. "the temperature drops sharply, the shadows are... wrong. and, for a minute, you can feel, you understand why so many cultures on earth revered the sun like they did, and why solar eclipses are given a prophetic and religious significance in so many places through history. you can feel that the world is wrong"
i dont remember what specific wonky type of solar eclipses they were but i remember reading shit like that
and now, my thoughts go to the moon
what would be needed for the moon to turn uncanny like that? what change could the moon possibly undergo, to be as unsettling? and i cant even think of weird changes in shape or color or whatever, tbh, because my mind is stuck on the mundane. would there be a size limit to it? would a too-small or a too-big moon cause unease like that? (interesting ramifications for planetary/space travel scenarios lol)
i think my favorite stories involving the moon are still the ones in which it blinks back at you. would two "normal" moons cause human (and/or animal) brains stress? i now want to read stories where the moon moves just a bit too fast
uncanny moon
