𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐜𝐚𝐧'𝐭 𝐰𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐩 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠? Because consumerism, as author Tish Warren describes, is the “silent, buried belief that if we can buy enough or travel enough or have the right experiences . . . we can make ourselves whole.” Yet the Preacher tells us with his firsthand experience that those who want more will 𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 (Ecclesiastes 5:10-11). No amount of buying or travelling or experiencing will fill the God-shaped hole in our hearts 💔. It's difficult to trust in God's plans and timing ⌚️, especially when the world tells us to trust in ourselves, our feelings, our abilities and strength. When we're tempted to take things into our own ✋ hands, to move without consulting God, may we be reminded to trust in the Lord and 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 (Proverbs 3:5). May we choose to seek God's direction for our lives, to grow in discernment, and to regularly commit all our plans to Him, trusting that 𝗛𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝗿 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗛𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁. — Collaboration between @ymi.today and @ourdailybreadsingapore

Our negative feelings 😠 (annoyance, jealousy) can point to truths about the world or ourselves that we're struggling to articulate. They may be godly emotions such as righteous anger or grief over brokenness, or they may reveal our sinful parts: 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐞, 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟-𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬, 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐞. Instead of acting out on these emotions or bottling them up, we need God to be the 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐬 🫀— to search and test our thoughts (Psalm 139:23-24), that we may discern the truths behind them and allow God to lead us down the right path. Do you feel stuck, unable to move forward or change for the better 😪? The Apostle Paul empathises with you: "𝗜 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗜 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗿𝘆 𝗶𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝘁" (Romans 7:18). Yet in the same breath he gives you the reason to hang on. "Who will rescue [us] from this body subject to death? 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸𝘀 𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗚𝗼𝗱, 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀 [𝘂𝘀] 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗝𝗲𝘀𝘂𝘀 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗟𝗼𝗿𝗱!" When we can't stop comparing ourselves with others, is it because some part of us thinks it's the only way to know if we're progressing and on the "𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭" 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐤? Yet 2 Corinthians 10:12 tells us that comparing is unwise, because it makes us lose perspective of whose standard really matters—𝐆𝐨𝐝'𝐬. Comparison makes us susceptible to the lie that our worth comes from faring better than others, when our worth really comes from the 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗚𝗼𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝘂𝘀 𝗮𝘀 𝗛𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻 👩‍👦. 😱 𝗔𝗻𝘅𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆, 𝗶𝗻 𝗶𝘁𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳, 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮 𝘀𝗶𝗻. There is nothing wrong with having anxious thoughts or episodes; but when we do feel anxious, we can let petitions and praises shape our worries into prayers, letting God know our concerns. 𝗛𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝘂𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻. As we seek to bring every loose thought 💭 and emotion to God and allow His Word to renew our minds 𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐛𝐲 𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 (2 Corinthians 10:5; Romans 12:2), God will bring a sense of His wholeness and peace into our lives. We are more likely to strive and worry incessantly about tomorrow: How can I pay the bills if I stop working? Will I ever own a home? Will I be able to care for my parents when they are old? We are like lost sheep, who have taken things into our own hands, and are in desperate need of a shepherd to guide us (Isaiah 53:6). Psalm 23 reminds us that God committed to providing for us, restoring us, and guiding us in His ways (vv.2-5) — just as a shepherd cares for his flock. What a privilege to have the almighty God as our good shepherd so that in Him, we can truly say, “I lack nothing.”

👩‍💻 Work can consume us such that we forget who we are outside of it. But our titles and accomplishment 𝗱𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝘂𝘀. We are loved, accepted, and precious in God's eyes. Even as we are called to work hard, it's always in service of exalting God above all else. In all our endeavors, let's pray 🤲 to “𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐇𝐢𝐬 𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐝𝐨𝐦 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐇𝐢𝐬 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐞𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬”, and trust that all the things we need will be given as well (Matthew 6:33).
