As part of our May 2023 Eco Trip, some members of the WARC team returned to Kegeyli, where they met friends and students from last year. We were delighted to see so many familiar faces again! The WARC team checked up on the filter and engineering projects that were installed last spring, and then also conducted mini seminars on computer science, environmental law, and university applications. After a successful end to our project in Janbaskala, our team took a trip up north, where, past dirt roads, desert basins, and steep canyons, they encountered the Aral Sea itself, a roaring body of water still full of life. Telegram | Instagram | Website

The highlight of our Eco Fest was our Eco Theatre group’s performance of their play, “Finding Aral in Time.” Inspired by the oral histories that students collected from elder relatives and members of their community, the play followed a young boy’s pursuit of a wailing woman, the spirit of the Aral Sea. Students used the power of storytelling to invite the community of Janbaskala to recall the past and to imagine a future harmonious with nature. Telegram | Instagram | Website

Another team that showcased all of their hard work during our Eco Fest in Janbaskala was the Environmental Law group. After studying argumentative strategies, legal concepts, and comparative environmental laws, the students engaged in a Mock Trial exercise where they had to settle a fictional court case between a family of farmers and their local government. Students from Schools 39 and 47 agreed that this was their favorite activity out of the WARC curriculum! Telegram | Instagram | Website

At WARC, we believe in equipping our students with the skills to create and implement their own innovative solutions to environmental problems. As part of our May 2023 program in Janbaskala, students created their own business and project plans following a lesson on start-ups.

On June 9, a WARC team of 3 volunteers went out to TIS for Eco Bazaar event to share experiences from the May trip and to fundraise for the next year projects. Led by TIS student 11th grade Ulugbek, the group managed to raise 400,000 soums in donations and get revenue of 200,000 soums by selling Karakalpak souvenirs and WARC merch. Dilshod and Jasmine, May trip participants, connected to TIS community members by sharing the goals of our projects and specific achievements of the May project in Karakalpakstan. TIS staff members, teachers, students, and parents all expressed interest in our project and our volunteers were glad to connect and explain. The WARC connection with the TIS community was made possible by Greener Tomorrows Club (website & Instagram), a student-led co-curricular activity club in TIS. Greener Tomorrows has been a long-standing donor to several Aral Region related initiatives. Starting from Spring, we managed to fundraise over $310 through joint effort. The funds went to renovating and installing a 500 L/hour filter in School 39. WARC is honored to work with the club and the TIS community to bring ecological change in rural areas of Karakalpakstan. Our team will be further connecting to the community by visiting events next year, so stay tuned! 💌 Donation info Telegram | Instagram | Website
