The tariff isn’t even paid by the economic competitor, it’s paid by whoever wishes to import a product from said country. Trump is going to do what Biden did on Chinese EVs, but 10fold. Both do the bidding of Judeo-American corporate financial elites who view “protectionism” as a strategy to scare countries into losing the American market and bully them into not dedollarizing. I doubt any other powerful country really cares about losing 350 million broke Americans when they can confidently rely on exports everywhere else in the world. The tariff selling point is that it “protects American jobs” and this may be true for some and it may also benefit corporate executives, but it leads to Americans being price gouged more than anything because when you slap a tariff on say a Chinese vehicle, now the American automaker is comfortable knowing people won’t be able to buy a Chinese alternative, so the domestic automaker will jack its prices up on the American consumer. You’re forced to buy shitty American cars built by third world replacements at astronomical costs because puppet politicians make buying Chinese impossible. If you’re a small business with a fleet of vehicles that transports goods and sells overseas, well now your export business will suffer because you’re paying more than you should be for your fleet while your foreign competitors are buying cheap from China allowing them to beat your prices. This could force you to lay off workers.
